Hollandia is rated as one of the strongest magic truffles on the Dutch market. Avalon Magic Plants estimates that it contains about twice as much psilocybin as Atlantis, a truffle most shops already place in the middle of their range. That estimate comes from the shop and grower. No independent laboratory has published a measurement of Hollandia that we could find.
So the honest answer is: probably strong, possibly very strong, and less predictable than the label suggests.
Where strength ratings come from
Shops show truffle strength with stars, flames, bars or a word such as "strong". Those ratings are shop classifications. They are based on what the grower says and on what customers report back, and they help to put strains in a rough order. They are not the result of testing each batch, and different shops do not use the same scale.
| Strength class (shop rating) | Typical strains | What the shop advises |
|---|---|---|
| Mild | Mexicana, Pajaritos | Suited to a first session |
| Medium | Tampanensis, Atlantis | Atlantis: 5 to 9 g light, 10 to 15 g strong |
| Strong | Hollandia and a few other house strains | Hollandia: 7.5 g to start, 15 g for experienced users |
The table summarises how shops classify and advise. It is an order, not a measurement.
What has actually been measured
The best published data on truffle potency is still small. An Italian laboratory measured psilocybin in samples of Psilocybe sclerotia and found 0.59 to 1.68 milligrams per gram of fresh truffle (Pellegrini et al., 2013). The strongest sample contained almost three times as much as the weakest.
Applied to a 15 gram pack, that range works out at roughly 9 to 25 milligrams of psilocybin. That is a calculation from other truffles, not a measurement of Hollandia. If Hollandia really holds twice what Atlantis does, a full pack would sit at or above the top of that range. For comparison, research studies with pure psilocybin often give a single dose of 25 milligrams, to screened volunteers under supervision.
Two conclusions follow. A strong strain can plausibly deliver a dose at the level used in research settings. And because natural potency varies so much, the same 7.5 grams can feel noticeably different from one pack to the next.
Why the same Hollandia can feel stronger or weaker
- Batch and freshness. Natural variation between harvests, and slow loss of potency during storage.
- An empty or full stomach. On an empty stomach effects arrive sooner and harder.
- Tea or lemon. Both are reported to make onset faster and the peak sharper. See dosage.
- Recent use. Tolerance builds quickly, and there is cross-tolerance between psilocybin and LSD (Isbell et al., 1961).
- Antidepressants. SSRIs and SNRIs often weaken the effects, also months after stopping (Gukasyan et al., 2023).
How a strong session unfolds
Dutch public information gives 20 to 60 minutes before effects begin and about three to four hours of main effects (DRUGSinfo, Trimbos Institute). Avalon gives four to six hours for Hollandia. In practice the timeline looks like this:
- 0 to 45 minutes. Little or nothing, then yawning, cold hands, a heavy or uneasy stomach.
- 45 to 90 minutes. Colours intensify, surfaces start to move, thinking becomes associative. With Hollandia this rise can be steep.
- 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The peak. At a strong dose, sense of time and of self can loosen completely. Visual effects with eyes closed are often vivid and detailed.
- 3.5 to 6 hours. A gradual comedown, with waves that return. Most people are not sober at this stage and should not drive or make plans.
In a controlled study with pure psilocybin, effects on consciousness increased step by step with dose, and at the higher doses performance on an attention test dropped by half (Hasler et al., 2004). Stronger means more of everything: more visual change, more emotional intensity, less ability to steer.
What a strong dose tends to feel like
Composite account, assembled from recurring patterns in published experience reports. It does not describe one real person.
Someone experienced with Atlantis takes half a pack of Hollandia at home, with a sober friend present. For the first forty minutes it feels like a mild Atlantis session. Then the room starts to breathe and the patterns on a rug turn into slow, folding geometry. Music becomes overwhelming for a while and is switched to something quieter. Around the second hour, time stops making sense: a song seems to last twenty minutes. There is a stretch of strong emotion, sadness and laughter close together, that passes after the friend suggests moving to another room. By hour five most effects are gone, leaving tiredness and a strong wish to sleep.
The patterns that recur in reports of strong truffles are consistent: the rise comes faster than expected, difficult phases are usually short when someone changes the setting, and people who added a second portion "because nothing happened" are overrepresented among the hard experiences.
Milder alternatives
If you have never taken truffles, or only once, a milder strain teaches you how your body reacts with less at stake.
